ABSTRACT
Abstract BACKGROUND The chemical catalytic conversion of carbohydrates into γ‐valerolactone (GVL) is a sustainable alternative to the petrochemical process starting from depleting fossil resources. Direct (fructose, glucose, starch and cellulose) GVL was achieved via combined heteropoly acid based SO 3 H‐functionalized ionic liquid (HAIL) supported ruthenium (Ru) catalyst system in one pot water media. RESULTS A 63% yield (based on fructose) obtained under catalysis 1‐methyl‐3‐(3‐sulfopropylimidazolium)silicotungstate ([MIMPS] 4 SiW) Ru/ZrO 2 at 180 °C, first 0.1 MPa nitrogen (N ) for h (dehydration), then hydrogen (H 10 (hydrogenation). Under same reaction conditions, yields cellulose were 68%, 60% 60%, respectively. recyclability consisting [MIMPS] SiW investigated four runs. activity did not change after use. Partial deactivation observed, which ascribed severe carbon deposition. CONCLUSIONS In present method, HAIL catalysts loaded together. No separation and/or neutralization step reported literature needed only an atmosphere (from N H involved. Therefore, we provide promising method efficient GVL. © 2019 Society Chemical Industry
