ABSTRACT
The ability of steroids to modulate the appearance Interleukin-1(IL-1) in vivo was evaluated a model endotoxin shock. High levels IL-1 were found serum from A/J mice which sensitized with P. acnes and challenged bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). factor appeared 2-4 hours after LPS challenge dependent on period sensitization dose LPS. Treating dexamethasone prior resulted significantly lower thymocyte proliferative activity serum. Three experiments demonstrated that this reduced reflects decrease IL-1. 1) not due presence proliferation inhibitors since mixing dexamethasone-treated purified or adding equivalent amount steroid directly cultures did reduce degree proliferation. 2) When fractionated by gel filtration, for both control treated sera eluted at 10-16 kilodaltons; however, nearly 50% less sample steroid-treated mice. 3) In addition activity, induces an increase titer acute phase protein known as amyloid A. Both serum- gel-purified samples able induce SAA, but again much active. We conclude produced has properties titre is treatment.
