ABSTRACT
Liquid-based cytology processing of breast fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens has been used in our institution since 1999. The aim this study was to investigate the role liquid-based (Thin-Prep(R)) evaluation FNA specimens. This carried out on 352 cases corresponding equal number women (134 malignant and 218 benign) examined from September 1999 June 2003. A direct vial planned. Aspirated material directly immersed cytolytR (Cytyc Corporation, Boxborough, MA). were transported laboratory non-refrigerated within 24 hr. Thin-Prep slides made using 2000 processor. remaining embedded paraffin.Altogether, unsatisfactory smears observed 14 (3.9 %) all cases. histologic examination verified that 128 131 total 203 207 benign correctly diagnosed with cytological technique. False positives found four false negative three technique presented a sensitivity 97.7%, specificity 98%, positive predictive value (PPV) 96.9%, PNV 98.5%, an over accuracy (OA) 97.9%.The offers accurate diagnostic tool. could reduce uncertainty based FNA, because it possibility embed paraffin take tissue sections histological appearance identical those routine sections. Moreover potential advantage retraining extra for purpose ploidy analysis immunohistochemical order offer information concerning expression prognostic markers such as p53, MIB-1, steroid hormone receptors, EGFR.
