ABSTRACT
Purpose Mammography is the only method that has been proven to detect breast microcalcifications (MCs), but sensitivity of mammography varies according density. This paper proposes an ultrasound (US) color Doppler twinkling artifact (CDTA) with optimized transmit conditions identify MCs without ionizing radiation. Methods The for US imaging (CDI) were enhance (TA) arises from random scattering on rough surfaces MCs. To validate proposed MC detection method, a chicken phantom particles (groups <400 and <240 ) was fabricated scanned by digital system research platform L11‐5v linear array probe three‐dimensional (3D) motion tracking system. Results From experiment, 3D CDTA (i.e., center frequency 5.0 MHz, f‐number 1.3, peak negative pressure 1.83 MPa) successfully detected all 16 particles, comparable mammography. For human surgical specimen in ex vivo study, 10 clusters, marked radiologist mammogram, identified method. Conclusions In studies, MCs, spatial localization highly correlated mammogram results. These results indicate great potential
