ABSTRACT
Abstract Background This study aimed to determine the prevalence of probable sarcopenia and in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by using European Working Group on Sarcopenia Older People (EWGSOP2) diagnostic criteria. Methods was assessed sequential four‐step algorithm. (1) Find: risk simple clinical symptom index (strength, assistance walking, rise from a chair, climb stairs, falls [SARC‐F questionnaire]). (2) Assess: Probable low muscle strength handgrip. (3) Confirm: Confirmed appendicular skeletal mass bioimpedance analysis. (4) Severity: Severe 4‐m gait speed test. Results A total 129 adult IBD younger than 65 years 50 age‐ sex‐matched healthy control (HC) participants were included study. Handgrip strength, speed, SARC‐F scores significantly lower HCs ( P = 0.032, <0.0001, respectively). Based EWGSOP2 definition, 17.8% had sarcopenia, six confirmed sarcopenia. According ethnicity‐based population thresholds, 34.9% two Corticosteroid use within past year identified as an independent factor for 0.012; odds ratio, 4.133), along advanced age activity. Conclusion One‐third defined whereas incidence remained relatively low.
