ABSTRACT
This article investigates the response of composite sandwich panel with Nomex honeycomb core subjected to low‐velocity impact and compression after (CAI) by using methods experiments numerical simulations. Low‐velocity panels at five energy levels is carried out research damage resistance tolerance. A failure model based on Hashin criterion implemented intralaminar behavior laminated plies in simulation. The cohesive zone used simulate delamination between adjacent plies. defined as an elastic–plastic material. Good agreements, terms contact‐force histories, shapes, indentation depths panels, are observed experimental results. During CAI analysis, damaged present a phenomenon quick crack propagation from location each unloaded side structural strength reached. It found that in‐plane compressive almost 25–35% reduction than undamaged panels. POLYM. COMPOS., 38:646–656, 2017. © 2015 Society Plastics Engineers
