ABSTRACT
Abstract The state of sorbed water and the sorbing processes to various polymer thin films were studied with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. To prepare films, we used poly(ethylene glycol)s different molecular weights kinds vinyl polymers, such as poly(2‐methoxyethyl acrylate). OH stretching band in increased gradually on contact vapor at 50% relative humidity leveled off. When bands compared, peak positions profiles polymeric materials same hydrogen‐bonding site similar. A hybrid density‐functional method supported assignment peaks. Furthermore, diffusion coefficient ( D ) was estimated by time‐resolved measurements very initial stage (0–830 s). It clearly shown that values a strong smaller than those hydrophobic polymers. usefulness FTIR technique investigate sorption definitely demonstrated. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
