2015 President's Plenary International Psycho‐oncology Society: psychosocial care as a human rights issue—challenges and opportunities

ABSTRACT
Abstract The International Psycho‐Oncology Society (IPOS) Human Rights Task Force has been working since 2008 to raise awareness and support, for the relevance of psychosocial cancer care as a human rights issue. In 2014 “Lisbon Declaration: Psychosocial Cancer Care Universal Right” was fully endorsed by IPOS. Subsequently, IPOS Standard on Quality Care, 75 organizations worldwide, updated now includes 3 core principles: should be recognised universal right; must integrate domain into routine care; Distress measured 6th vital sign. President's plenary held at 2015 World Congress in Washington DC devoted discussing Many challenges opportunities are illustrated different continents contexts: from Africa where resources basic treatment scarce children their parents face significant difficulties with hospital detention practices; Europe many countries is still seen luxury; Middle East Muslim women stigma culture silence over cancer. We further discuss how move Lisbon Declaration forward towards its implementation clinical practice globally, using successful example Health Assembly resolution supporting palliative right which achieved widespread approval, identifying role Federation National Psychoncology Societies plays worldwide this agenda forward.
