ABSTRACT
Abstract Objective Increased risk of prostate cancer (PCa) is observed in men with BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. Sex and gender are key determinants health disease although unequal care exists between the sexes. Stereotypical male attitudes shown to lead poor outcomes. Methods Men BRCA1/2 mutations diagnosed PCa were identified invited participate a qualitative interview study. Data analysed using framework approach. “Masculinity theory” was used report impact having both mutation PCa. Results Eleven 15 eligible interviewed. The umbrella concept “Ambiguity Masculine World” evident. Men's responses often matched those women genetic context. BRCA experience described, as “on back burner” but “a bonus” enabling familial detection early diagnosis Embodiment took precedence revealed stereotypical “ideal” masculine such stoicism control while creating new “masculinities” when faced vicissitudes 2 gendered conditions. Conclusion Health workers urged take reflexive approach, void ideals, belief which obfuscates men's experience. Research required regarding support needs name equality care.
