ABSTRACT
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) archive is a rich source of information in the form atomic-level three-dimensional (3D) structures biomolecules experimentally determined using macromolecular crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and electron microscopy (3DEM). Originally established 1971 as resource for protein crystallographers to freely exchange data, today PDB data drive research education across scientific disciplines. In 2011, online portal PDB-101 was launched support teachers, students, general public exploration (pdb101.rcsb.org). Maintained by Research Collaboratory Structural Bioinformatics PDB, aims help train next generation users promote overall importance structural biology science nonexperts. Regularly published features include highly popular Molecule Month series, 3D model activities, molecular animation videos, educational curricula. Materials are organized into various categories (Health Disease, Molecules Life, Biotech Nanotech, Structures Structure Determination) searchable keyword. A biennial health focus frames new creation provides topics annual video challenges high school students. Web analytics document that materials relating fundamental (e.g., hemoglobin, catalase) accessed year-on-year. addition, created response topical matters Zika, measles, coronavirus) well received. shows how learning about diverse shapes functions promotes understanding all aspects biology, from central dogma disease biological energy.
