ABSTRACT
Nepeta menthoides Boiss. & Buhse and Melissa officinalis are extensively used in Persian medicine for the treatment of depression. Considering active ingredients main phenolic compounds these plants possible synergistic effects, this study examined antidepressant antioxidant activities aqueous extract N. (NM) M. (MO) reserpinized mice alone combination. Mice were pretreated orally 1-week with normal saline (10 ml/kg), fluoxetine (20 mg/kg), imipramine NM (50-100-200-400 MO (150-350-550-750 combination (NM 50 150 mg/kg). The behavioral changes evaluated using forced swim, tail suspension, open field tests, 24 hr after reserpine injection (4 mg/kg) on eighth day. amounts components extracts catalase (CAT) as a brain oxidative stress measured enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data showed that produced action behaviors significant increase CAT activity. High-performance liquid chromatography results rosmarinic acid contents 6.42 ± 1.1 11.03 2.16 mg/g dried extract, respectively. Total flavonoid higher than NM. findings suggest present produces an antidepressant-like effect, which is possibly triggered by its properties.
