ABSTRACT
Surface quenching is the main reason limiting luminescence performance of Ln 3+ ‐doped nanocrystals and their practical applications. Although shell passivation strategy effectively improves efficiency, understanding relevant mechanisms remains elusive contradictory explanations are often proposed. Herein, context debates on this topic reviewed emphasizing that discordant viewpoints probably due to lack consideration chemical disorders such as inhomogeneity, core–shell element intermixing, inhomogeneous dopant distribution in crystals. A clear awareness extent these deleterious impact properties (intensified by energy migration process) crucial avoid misinterpretations experimental findings.
