ABSTRACT
Engineering noble metal‐based electrocatalysts (NMEs) with high activity is of vital importance to accelerate the hydrogen production from proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). However, poor stability and price NMEs greatly restrict practical application. In this review, a series strategies are summarized boost reduce cost under acidic condition perspective composition structure optimization. The regulation through doping metals or nonmetals can effectively inspire alloy effect cocktail NMEs, which provides an essential guidance enhance NMEs. Meanwhile, optimization also directly improves intrinsic comprehensively elaborated based on size, defect, geometric effects. addition, extend industrial application PEMWEs, critical scientific issues behind formulating electrocatalyst slurry coating method–PEMWEs performance relationships fully clarified. Finally, challenges for survivability active center, catalytic mechanism research, construction electrode concluded. This review offers comprehensive targeted guidelines rational design PEMWEs
