A pilot survey of farm animal welfare in Serbia, a country preparing for EU accession

ABSTRACT
Abstract The selection and field application of animal‐based welfare measures for pigs, sheep, dairy cows broilers was the first step towards future development improvement schemes Serbia – a country that is applying EU accession. aim this pilot study to: (1) test feasibility protocol monitoring farm animal in Serbia, (2) ascertain preliminary data on outcomes (3) gain insight into Serbian farmers’ understanding as part wider project working inclusion assessments ‘higher welfare’ voluntary assurance scheme. This encompasses national survey which were tested 105 farms by total ten trained assessors. Data views aspirations farmers from these also systematically gathered during face‐to‐face interviews. Existing have been successfully applied identified valid, reliable feasible other countries, found to be largely transferable. However, some on‐farm protocols, previously used had shortened logistical reasons when Serbia. Our findings suggest further refinement may needed order allow local all measures. While term ‘animal has only recently introduced language, seventy‐three percent heard it. Overall, few positive associations between farmer satisfaction with animals’ living conditions data. Many develop expand their farms, potentially enhance welfare, but financial technical advice support would achieve goals.
