ABSTRACT
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a prime regulator of angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and vascular permeability. Structurally VEGF is a homodimeric protein in which the monomers are linked by a pair of disulfide bonds. Six isoforms of VEGF which have 121, 145, 165, 183, 189 or 206 residues in each monomer are expressed in humans. These isoforms of VEGF appear by a different splicing process. VEGF165is the predominant molecular species, but transcripts encoding VEGF189 are also commonly found in cells expressing the VEGF gene. High levels of VEGF expression have been found in several types of human tumor. In animal models, overexpression of VEGF has been showed to enhance tumor growth whereas suppression of VEGF inhibited tumor growth in several types of tumor
