ABSTRACT
Compression of the tissue in the vicinity of a Po2 sensitive hypodermic needle electrode leads to low Po2 values which do not represent the oxygenation of the tissue. Therefore, instead of hypodermic needle probes for measurements of tissue oxygenation, multiwire surface probes are widely used (Hauss et al., 1982). However, as will be shown, if the response time of needle probes is sufficiently short it is possible to record “true” tissue Po2 values if the probe is moved in a stepwise fashion within the tissue, and if only the initial Po2 value indicated shortly after the end of each step movement is accepted.
