Observations of radio continua and terminology

Different components and successive stages of type IV bursts are reviewed. Some simplifications in the schematic representation of well developed type IV bursts are proposed. The existence of two physically distinct acceleration/injection mechanisms is discussed. Suggestions for further work are proposed.
