ABSTRACT
We describe the first phases of the Eureka project n°969 for the development of an earth robot called IARES (Illustrateur Autonome de Robotique mobile pour l'Exploration Spatiale). This project has been initiated in the frame of an international cooperation associating French Laboratories and Industrials to foreign partners (Spanishs, Russians and Hungarians). This demonstrator will show the feasibility of a planetary robot by testing in a realistic environment the robotics axes studied for several years in French and European research centers (Perception, Autonomous Path Generation, Locomotion, Localisation and Navigation, Telemanipulation, Tasks Management system and Ground Operations). Descriptions of the mars and lunar demonstrators are given before describing two robot movement modes, teleguided and partially-autonomous modes.
