ABSTRACT
The antioxidant activities of 4 tocopherols, tocol, and a water-soluble model analog alpha-tocopherol were compared. Egg lecithin liposomes used oxidation was catalyzed by Fe2+-ascorbate. decreased in the order alpha greater than beta gamma delta-tocopherol agreement with their potencies vivo. least effective. Activity depended on molar ratio to unsaturated lipid, one molecule each alpha-, beta-, gamma-, tocol capable protecting, respectively, 220, 120, 100, 30 20 molecules polyunsaturated fatty acid. mechanism possible effect compounds is discussed.
