ABSTRACT
An approximate equation enabling the prediction of the extent of reaction of a porous particle with a gas has recently been published. The equation, which is sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes, is simple to use once the various physical constants involved are known. This paper is concerned with the use of this approximate equation together with a suitable particle size distribution to predict the extent of reaction of a porous solid fed to a reactor as a function of residence time. The results are applicable to the design and optimization of batch, back-mix, or plug flow reactors in which noncatalytic gas-solid reactions take place.
