Elastic scattering of mesoatoms on hydrogen and on deuterium: Determination of the total spin state of the μp mesoatom

We measured the elastic-scattering cross-section of thermalized μp mesoatoms against hydrogen molecules (T=300 °K). The experimental results are in agreement with the predictions obtained by Cohenet al., and by Zel’dovich and Gershtein. We also measured the elastic-scattering cross-section of thermalized μd mesoatoms against deuterium molecules.
