ABSTRACT
The management of a consecutive series of 242 patients with carcinoma of the thoracic oesophagus and cardia, treated over the 16 year period from 1959–74 is reviewed. In the majority of cases (85.8 per cent) where exploration was undertaken, some form of resection was possible. Resection was considered radical in 51.6 per cent of the total series, with a 17.6 per cent hospital mortality, and an 18 per cent five year survival in this group. Surgical technique and methods of palliation are discussed.
