ABSTRACT
Te region of Curaçá was one the first regions Brazilian northeast to be ornithologically explored, and is known as type locality last stronghold Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), now extinct in wild. has been considered high conservation importance, particularly for holding some relicts Caraíba (Tabebuia caraiba) gallery forest Caatinga, representing most obvious place start a reintroduction program C. spixii. Despite international interest plight macaw frequent visits by ornithologists 30 years, no general avian survey undertaken region. In this paper, we present data from three independent feld seasons area, conducted 1997-98, 2000, 2011. We include on 204 bird species recorded region, including 28 taxa endemic Caatinga. an analysis relation their preferred habitats natural history breeding many them. particular, our observations wild individual spixii, describe nest behavior Compsothraupis loricata. also appendix with list all season when these records were obtained, seasonal status, main localities where each record quantitative assessment abundance part species, documentation (specimen, photograph, or audio recording) available species. conclude that rich, great diversity results its habitat heterogeneity, which includes arboreal shrubby forests, riverine riparian along Rio São Francisco, open areas artifcial ponds, are important aquatic birds.
