ABSTRACT
In order to obtain an ultrasonic elliptical vibration device with a simple structure, a novel single-driven ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting (SDUEVC) device with a complex-beam horn (CBH) is introduced and investigated in this paper. Using the theory of mechanical vibration, a mathematical model of the CBH is described. We studied the vibration characteristic of the SDUEVC using the finite element method (FEM). Experiments were carried out to investigate the vibration characteristics of the SDUEVC device prototype using a vibrometer, an oscilloscope, and a data processing system. In addition, the cutting characteristic of the prototype was verified. Our experimental results show that, compared to conventional cutting (CC), the SDUEVC device can reduce the cutting force and surface roughness.
