ABSTRACT
Abstract Purpose To collect and analyze radiation dose-related data as part of international cooperation; to define diagnostic reference levels (DRL) for 24 X-ray projections in plain radiography (DX) considering anatomical region, clinical task, procedural technique; harmonize the exposure practice across country borders. Methods A multicenter study was performed Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland 2022–23 provide data. Healthcare facilities were asked processed from their dose management systems. 5%-level used assessing statistical significance differences between various groups. Results Dose-related 85 radiographic systems academic non-academic, public, private healthcare analyzed. parameters differed significantly many with different tasks techniques. procedures varied by a maximum factor 16 same system, median values also hospitals 31. fifth surveyed exhibit doses above more than half new DRLs defined this study. Apart three procedures, no significant observed ages, manufacturers, or countries. Conclusions This is first survey which practices investigated institutions central European countries establishing radiography. The variations could be explained reasons, such non-optimized protocols. help Key Points Question What (DRLs) have been defined? Are there countries? Findings task technique can vary considerably among but, on average, do not differ neighboring Europe. Clinical relevance In study, promote optimization practice, reduce even national borders, strengthen cooperation users.
