ABSTRACT
Abstract. The Meso-NH Atmospheric Simulation System is a joint effort of the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques and Laboratoire d'Aérologie. It comprises several elements; numerical model able to simulate atmospheric motions, ranging from large meso-alpha scale down micro-scale, with comprehensive physical package, flexible file manager, an ensemble facilities prepare initial states, either idealized or interpolated meteorological analyses forecasts, post-processing graphical facility visualize results, interactive procedures control these functions. Some distinctive features this are following: currently based on Lipps Hemler form anelastic system, but may evolve towards more accurate equations system. In future, it will allow for simultaneous simulation scales motion, by so-called "interactive grid-nesting technique". allows in-line computation accumulation various terms budget quantities. transport diffusion passive scalars, be coupled chemical module. uses relatively new Fortran 90 compiler. tailored easily implemented any UNIX machine. designed as research tool small meso-scale processes. freely accessible community, we have tried make "user-friendly" possible, general although two goals sometimes appear contradictory. present paper presents description adiabatic formulation some basic validation simulations. A list available parametrizations initialization methods also given. precise aspects provided in further paper.
