Principles of Service Provision for Young People with Complex Needs: Insights from the Australian Service System

ABSTRACT
Abstract The term “complex needs” has been used to describe young people who have a range of multiple and co-occurring problems that can be caused by individual level (e.g., psychosocial needs) broader social-economic factors homelessness, child maltreatment, justice system involvement). Coordinating the services required support these successfully engaging them in challenging. purpose this study was gain deeper insight into barriers to, strategies for, service engagement among require from services. Interviews focus groups (N = 12) were conducted with relevant government non-government stakeholders an Australian jurisdiction obtain qualitative insights for effective engagement. Thematic analysis identified 20 principal themes differentiated two overarching categories relating engagement: 1) Barriers, 2) Strategies, across three levels: Systems; Services; 3) Individuals. Many facilitate applicable all levels. For example, ‘flexibility’ as facilitator practitioner structures. This highlights need overcome, employed, between complex needs. There is create environment adaptive needs rather than one which requires adapt any particular service.
