ABSTRACT
Nanoscale hydroxyapatites (HAps) were successfully synthesized by means of sol–gel method in the presence of ozonolysed natural rubber latex templates of various molecular weights. The thermal properties, functionality, crystallinity and morphology of HAp powder were characterized by simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results revealed that lower molecular weight ozonolysed natural rubber templates produced spheroidal and less crystalline HAp nanoparticles. A higher molecular weight template produced HAp nano-rod-like particles with higher crystallinity. The results obtained in this work suggest that the molecular weight as well as functionality of the biomacromolecule template affect the phase crystallinity and morphology of synthesized HAp.
