ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Proton pump inhibitors are among the most widely prescribed drugs in world, but more than half of indications for prescription unjustified. The misuse this therapeutic class has heavy consequences such as additional health costs, adverse drug reactions following long-term use and gastric acid rebound when proton inhibitor is discontinued. Objective overprescription therefore becoming a public problem, which led us to evaluate their within Geneva University Hospitals. Setting Patients hospitalized two divisions department internal medicine Hospitals on single day. Methods This register-based cross-sectional study it collected data about pattern by consulting electronic records patients included. Main outcome measure To determine if made according market authorization available guidelines. Results Hundred-eighty were 54% inhibitors, 29% whom had treatment initiated at hospital.
