Provision of drug and alcohol services amidst COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative evaluation on the experiences of service providers

ABSTRACT
Abstract Background The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the provision drug and alcohol (D&A) services associated outcomes have been under-researched. Aim This study aimed to understand experiences service providers in relation how were affected during pandemic, including adaptations made lessons learnt for future. Method Focus groups semi-structured interviews conducted with participants from various D&A organisations across UK. Data audio recorded, followed by transcription thematic analysis. Results A total 46 representing recruited between October January 2022. analysis identified ten themes. required significant changes treatment was provided prioritised. Expansion telehealth digital described, which reduced wait times increased opportunities peer network. However, they described missed disease screening, some users risked facing exclusion. Participants who opiate substitution therapy spoke improving provider/user trust following shift daily supervised consumption weekly dispensing. At same time, feared fatal overdoses non-adherence treatment.
