ABSTRACT
Abstract Discussions on the status of definitions life have long been dominated by a position known as definitional pessimism. Per pessimist, there is no point in trying to define life. This claim defended different ways, but one shared assumptions all pessimists that our attempts are provide list necessary and sufficient conditions for something count alive. In other words, definition strict, descriptive definition. Against this, several pragmatic alternatives put forward. On these accounts, not strictly, rather loosely descriptive. Their purpose be true, useful scientists guiding scientific practice. More recently, this has come under attack being able explain how connected progress within biological sciences.
