ABSTRACT
Abstract The Brachybasidiaceae are a family of 22 known species plant-parasitic microfungi belonging to Exobasidiales, Basidiomycota. Within this family, the largest genus Kordyana develop balls basidia on top stomatal openings. Basidial cells originate from fungal stroma filling substomatal chambers. Species typically infect Commelinaceae. During fieldwork in neotropics, fungi morphologically similar spp. were found Goeppertia (syn. Calathea spp., Marantaceae), namely G. panamensis Panama and propinqua Bolivia. These specimens proposed as representatives new science, Marantokordyana , based distinct host molecular sequence data ITS LSU rDNA regions. two represent M. oberwinkleriana boliviana . They differ by size shape their basidia, regions, plant species. In past, understanding at order level was significantly improved investigation realized Franz Oberwinkler his collaborators University Tübingen, Germany. On level, however, our knowledge is still very poor due incomplete descriptions several existing names literature, scarceness specimens, well lacking for many taxa further barcode Especially Dicellomyces need revision.
