ABSTRACT
Here I examine the potential for art-science collaborations to be basis deliberative discussions on research agendas and direction. Responsible Research Innovation (RRI) has become a science policy goal in synthetic biology several other high-profile areas of scientific research. While offer engage both publics scientists thus possess facilitate desired "mutual responsiveness" (René von Schomberg) between researchers, institutional actors, various stakeholders, there are challenges effectively implementing as well dangers potentially instrumentalizing artistic work or innovation when power differentials remain unacknowledged. Art-science can thought processes exchange which require acknowledgement attention (how conceptual material resource new aesthetics work) identification aesthetic dimensions affective framings part specific epistemological research). suggest advantage specifically identifying public engagement/science communication distinct aspect such projects so that aesthetic, social science/philosophical not subsumed assumption primary only value is form engagement mediate biological community relations. Likewise, may benefits acknowledging an art-science-RRI triangle stepping stone more reflexive agenda within STS/science communication/science community. Using BrisSynBio, EPSRC/BBSRC-funded centre biology, will discuss framing practical implementation make remarks what happened there. The empirical evidence reviewed here supports model propose but additionally, points need broaden conception possible purposes, motivations art, example, case cross-sectoral collaboration with engaged art.
