ABSTRACT
Absorptive capacity has been marked as one of the most important capabilities Multinational Corporations for effective management knowledge. To address calls research on micro-level origins concept, this paper focuses determinants individual-level absorptive capacity. We examine extent to which individuals’ capability recognize, assimilate and exploit new knowledge from environment is shaped by different forms work motivation (i.e., intrinsic extrinsic), overall ability, exposure diverse country contexts personal characteristics. Drawing extending Motivation–Ability–Opportunity framework, we develop test a set hypotheses. Using unique dataset collected 648 individuals in multinational corporation, show that ability are key antecedents In contrast, extrinsic does not emerge significant predictor. find past international assignments distant countries could be detrimental However, our results suggest those who open experiences, become useful opportunity development. These findings contribute existing literature showing effects alternative types underscoring importance using selective assignment when considering context tool employee
