ABSTRACT
Abstract The slipperiness of ice is well known while, for skating, its mechanism still needs further investigation, where the complex interactions including thermal conduction skate—meltwater—ice system, ploughing and frictional melting to friction force are unclear. This study presents a theoretical framework simplified analytical solution unveil when curved skate sliding on ice. theory validated by experiments effects these various factors, velocity, temperature, supporting weight, geometry blade revealed in detail. finds that contribution from deformation through indentation fluid shear motion meltwater layer comparable with each other, which thus clarifies how substrate together regulates during skating.
