ABSTRACT
The hypothesis of this study is that biodiversity researchers perceive biodiversity to be personally significant since they have been able to combine their scientific expertise with their emotional connection to nature. Using the Model of Educational Reconstruction, we conducted a study among 12 biodiversity researchers. We have collected data through four focus groups and analyzed this data using Grounded Theory methodology. The results show that eight of the twelve scientists feel there is a conflict between their relationship with nature and their day-to-day work. Within this context, a number of participants demonstrated “bilingual” capacities; in other words, they have developed effective strategies that aim to bridge their personal values and scientific knowledge in a positive way. In this study, we define three strategies based on qualitative data derived from the interviews: “dichotomous self-image,” “acceptance of contradiction” and “metaphorical reinterpretation”. Using these strategies as a foundation, we have developed preliminary guidelines that can help stimulate biodiversity education and public discussion.
