ABSTRACT
Online learning environments demand learners to self-regulate their but many are poor at self-regulated (SRL). In this paper, two studies were conducted examine the effect of SRL supports, i.e., guiding goal setting and planning using an approach known as mental contrasting implementation intentions (MCII) prompting videos, on motivation in form task value self-efficacy, persistence, strategies, self-evaluation, self-satisfaction, student engagement, performance, attainment. Study 1, a (MCII, no MCII) by (prompt, prompt) between-subjects controlled experiment was online video-based environment. Results showed that who completed MCII had more sustained higher persistence than did not receive MCII. 2 five Massive Open Courses where we compared three conditions: MCII, only, control. there significant differences activities, course engagement attainment among conditions. Collectively, results suggest duration which learners’ goals can be attained (e.g., within one short session or over multiple weeks) might influence effectiveness
