ABSTRACT
Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are a in aquatic environments due to possible adverse effects on the environment and humans. This study assessed occurrence mass flows CECs Sweden's three largest lakes 24 associated rivers. The distribution 105 was investigated, comprising 71 pharmaceuticals, 13 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), eight industrial chemicals, four personal care products (PCPs), parabens, two pesticides, other (mostly anthropogenic markers). is first systematic main one report environmental concentrations chemicals tributyl citrate acetate 2,2'-dimorpholinyldiethyl-ether. ∑CEC concentration generally higher river water (31-5200 ng/L; median 440 ng/L) than lake (36-900 190 ng/L). At urban sites, seasonal variations were observed for PCPs also antihistamines, antidiabetics, antineoplastic agents, antibiotics, fungicides. CEC load 180 g/day (range 4.0-4300 g/day), with total 5000 Lake Vänern, 510 Vättern, 5600 Mälaren. All used as drinking reservoirs, so further investigations impact ecosystem human health needed.
