Sharing public open spaces with local schools: A stakeholder-based analysis of governance issues

ABSTRACT
Overcrowding has been recognised as a common issue in urban schools and major barrier to children's outdoor activities their school environments. Many draw on neighbourhood open space yet associated governance issues have not sufficiently analysed. This qualitative study explored key stakeholders' perspectives various topics that supported or discouraged sharing spaces with schools. We involved principals, local council officers, state government representatives, design experts, primary students aged 8–12 from across four Australian metropolitan areas. The findings reveal the relationship between stakeholders at levels; capacities, power interests managing shared use of public space; well essential governing tasks tools. paper argues for through networks, which is dynamic distributed among range stakeholders. will require development mutually agreed guidelines bridge gaps coordination design, implementation management spaces. include planning close spaces, establishing safe corridors designing amenities adapting curricula learning.
