ABSTRACT
Cloud and edge computing have proposed different functionalities to enable multiple applications requiring communication, computing, caching (3C) resources. The upcoming futuristic (e.g., metaverse, holographic, haptic communication) impose further stringent requirements ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability) on the infrastructure. These call for a paradigm shift in infrastructure architecture where all resource components owners collaborate from cloud up edge, creating cloud-to-edge continuum of integrated Furthermore, we argue that artificial intelligence (AI) collaborative-based decisions are promising techniques efficiently manage highly complex jointly leverages 3C continuum. This article presents comprehensive survey existing research, including AI studies, targeting effective seamless provision resources services Through an extensive analysis driving use cases, synergy between these three main is scrutinized highlight its crucial role next-generation network infrastructures (NGNI). Finally, discussion opportunities challenges brought by integrating NGNI perspectives, architectural design as well regulatory business aspects, presented.
