ABSTRACT
Crohn's disease (CD), a type of inflammatory bowel (IBD), is chronic condition the gastrointestinal tract that caused by loss mucosal tolerance towards commensal bacteria resulting in responses. It has long been postulated gut microbiota, complex and dynamic population microorganisms, plays key role pathogenesis IBD. Maternal diagnosis IBD identified as greatest risk factor for offspring increasing odds developing >4.5-fold. Moreover, babies born to mothers with have demonstrated reduced bacterial diversity. There accumulating evidence early life microbiota colonization informed maternal diet within 3rd trimester pregnancy. While would pose an ideal cohort intervention, no primary prevention measures are currently available. Therefore, we designed MELODY (Modulating Early Life Microbiome through Dietary Intervention Pregnancy) trial test whether IBD-AID™ dietary intervention during last pregnancy can beneficially shift microbiome CD patients their babies, thereby promoting strong, effective immune system critical time development. We will also if favorable changes lead postpartum relapse lower inflammation offspring. This study help create new opportunities foster healthy at high other immune-mediated diseases, potentially reducing later life.
