ABSTRACT
Cancers of the skin are most commonly occurring cancers in humans. In fair-skinned populations, up to 95% keratinocyte and 70-95% cutaneous melanomas caused by ultraviolet radiation thus theoretically preventable. Currently, however, there is no comprehensive global advice on practical steps be taken reduce toll cancer. To address this gap, an expert working group comprising clinicians researchers from Africa, America, Asia, Australia, Europe, together with learned societies (European Association Dermato-Oncology, Euromelanoma, Euroskin, European Union Medical Specialists, Melanoma World Society) reviewed extant evidence issued following evidence-based recommendations for photoprotection as a strategy prevent Fair skinned people, especially children, should minimise their exposure radiation, advised use protective measures when UV index forecast reach 3 or higher. Protective include combination seeking shade, physical protection (e.g. clothing, hat, sunglasses), applying broad-spectrum, SPF 30+ sunscreens uncovered skin. Intentional solar purpose sunbathing tanning considered unhealthy behaviour avoided. Similarly, solaria other artificial sources encourage strongly discouraged, through regulation if necessary. Primary prevention cancer has positive return investment. We policymakers communicate these messages general public promote wider implementation.
