ABSTRACT
The observation of structural distortions in complex oxides is becoming more important order to explain their macroscopic behavior. X-ray photoelectron diffraction an excellent technique study the crystal structure and potentially observe oxygen element-specific fashion. Its surface-sensitive character opens up possibility perform experiments on ultra-thin films without probing substrate underneath. For BaBiO3 thin films, for example recent experimental results point towards a suppression breathing mode with decreasing film thickness resulting decreased energy band gap. As another example, nontrivial electronic predicted [111]-bilayers LaMnO3. However, likely presence Jahn–Teller distortion would suppress topological phase. Here, working principle x-ray described data analysis required afterwards discussed. interference patterns are obtained various thicknesses LaMnO3 films. Experimental compared multiple-scattering simulations. Although, indications observed, we discuss limitations quantifying displacement atoms.
