ABSTRACT
The world's coral reefs are threatened by the cumulative impacts of global climate change and local stressors. Driven largely a desire to understand interactions between corals their symbiotic microorganisms, use this knowledge eventually improve health, interest in microbiology microbiome has increased recent years. In review, we summarize role maintaining healthy metaorganism providing nutrients, support for growth development, protection against pathogens, mitigation environmental We explore concept engineering, that is, precise controlled manipulation aid enhance resilience tolerance changing oceans. Although engineering is clearly its infancy, several breakthroughs indicate such an effective tool restoration preservation these valuable ecosystems. To assist with identifying future research targets, have reviewed common principles applications improving human health agricultural productivity, drawing parallels where can advance not-too-distant future. Finally, end discussing challenges faced researchers practitioners application provide recommendations work.
