ABSTRACT
Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced by gut microbiota as fermentation products of digestion-resistant oligosaccharides and fibers. Their primary roles functioning major energy sources for colon cells assisting in homeostasis immunomodulation. Recent evidence suggests that they affect various organs both at cellular molecular levels, regulate functions distance sites including gene expression, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis inflammation. In this study, we examined whether SCFAs present the mouse eye inflammatory responses retinal astrocytes (RACs). We observed intra-peritoneal injected were detected reduced intraocular inflammation induced lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Moreover, displayed two disparate effects on LPS-stimulated RACs – namely, cytokine chemokine production was reduced, but ability to activate T enhanced. Our results support existence gut-eye cross talk suggest can blood-eye-barrier via systemic circulation. If applied high concentrations, may reduce impact milieu.
