ABSTRACT
Abstract A two-step hybrid transport approach utilizing ADVANTG for variance reduction and MCNP for particle transport was used to assess sky-shine dose rates around the future DEMO reactor. Specifically, optimization of the required thickness of the reinforced concrete building around the tokamak to meet the dose limitation at the DEMO site boundary during the most interesting and potentially problematic scenario of breeding blanket maintenance. The results show that the currently assumed thickness of the maintenance hall domed roof, 1.5 m, is sufficient. Furthermore, based on the thickness variation analysis, the dome thickness could be reduced to 1 m and still suffice for the sky-shine radiation shielding criteria.
