ABSTRACT
Studies have identified hundreds of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), there is increasing reliance on HRMS with suspect screening areas such as PFAS fate transport. Characterization active-use AFFF formulations crucial for maintaining representative lists efforts. Herein, targeted analysis, total oxidizable precursor assay (TOP), screening, non-targeted analysis were used to characterize an currently certified use by the U.S. military. The sum during was compared TOP, demonstrating that > 90% (20.2 mM) estimated concentration (22.4 comprised "unknown" PFAS. Tandem multi-stage tandem spectra annotate 10 within 9 classes, 8 which never been reported. A subset are fluorotelomer-based isomers legacy, electrochemically synthesized Thus, efforts rely solely accurate matching may mis-annotate presented here will key differences properties biotransformation pathways. ~20 mM, agrees fraction TOP.
