A transitivity analysis of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s third presidential debate

Cet article examine le langage du dernier des trois débats présidentiels américains entre Hillary Clinton et Donald Trump avant les élections générales de 2016. Pour explorer et interpréter les choix de processus au sein des groupes verbaux du point de vue de la grammaire fonctionnelle systémique, il a utilisé une boîte à outils de transitivité. Cet article vise à identifier les stimuli sous-jacents et les stratégies intelligentes à partir de la fréquence des choix de transitivité. La signification de ces choix a été étudiée à travers des méta-fonctions idéationnelles qui reflètent les expériences des producteurs de texte en utilisant une approche de méthode mixte. L'analyse textuelle comparative de l'exemple de texte a révélé que Donald Trump a utilisé cinquante et un pour cent alors que Hillary Clinton a utilisé quarante-neuf pour cent des processus dans le débat. L'utilisation prédominante des types de processus mentaux, comportementaux, relationnels et existentiels par Hillary Clinton a révélé son approche cognitive, sentimentale, sensible, attributive et existentielle. To explore and interpret the process-choices within verbal groups from the perspective of systemic functional grammar, it used a transitivity toolkit. This paper aims to identify the underlying stimuli and smart strategies from the frequency of transitivity choices. The meaning of these choices was investigated through ideational meta-functions which reflect the experiences of text producers using a mixed method approach. The comparative textual analysis of the sample text found that Donald Trump used fifty-one percent whereas Hillary Clinton used forty-nine percent of the processes in the debate. The predominant use of mental, behavioral, relational and existential process types by Hillary Clinton revealed her cognitive, sentimental, sensitive, attributive and existential approach. The frequent use of material and verbal process types by Donald Trump reflected his explicit and tangible outlook on the key issues facing the American state. The results also illustrate that the varying frequency of transitivity choices by both political rivals chiefly aimed at winning the support of the public in the polls.<br/>Este documento investiga el lenguaje del último de los tres debates presidenciales estadounidenses entre Hillary Clinton y Donald Trump antes de las elecciones generales de 2016. Para explorar e interpretar las opciones de proceso dentro de los grupos verbales desde la perspectiva de la gramática funcional sistémica, utilizó un conjunto de herramientas de transitividad. Este documento tiene como objetivo identificar los estímulos subyacentes y las estrategias inteligentes a partir de la frecuencia de las elecciones de transitividad. El significado de estas elecciones se investigó a través de metafunciones ideacionales que reflejan las experiencias de los productores de texto utilizando un enfoque de método mixto. El análisis textual comparativo del texto de muestra encontró que Donald Trump usó el cincuenta y uno por ciento, mientras que Hillary Clinton usó el cuarenta y nueve por ciento de los procesos en el debate. El uso predominante de los tipos de procesos mentales, conductuales, relacionales y existenciales por parte de Hillary Clinton reveló su enfoque cognitivo, sentimental, sensible, atributivo y existencial. El uso frecuente de tipos de procesos materiales y verbales por parte de Donald Trump reflejó su perspectiva explícita y tangible sobre los problemas clave que enfrenta el estado estadounidense. Los resultados también ilustran que la frecuencia variable de las elecciones de transitividad por parte de ambos rivales políticos apunta principalmente a ganar el apoyo del público en las encuestas.<br/>
