ABSTRACT
Accelerated skeletal muscle wasting is a shared trait among many pathologies and aging. Acupuncture has been used as therapeutic intervention to control pain; however, little known about its effects on atrophy function. The study's purpose was compare the of acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, electrical stimulation cast-induced atrophy.Forty female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into groups: Control, casted (CAST), CAST+Acupuncture (CAST-A), 4) CAST+Electro-acupuncture (CAST-EA), CAST+Electrical (CAST-ES) (n = 8). Plaster casting material wrapped around left hind limb. electro-acupuncture (10 Hz, 6.4 mA) treatments applied by needling acupoints (stomach-36 gallbladder-34). Electrical conducted lateral medial gastrocnemius muscles. Treatments for 15 min, three times/week 14 days. Muscle F-box (MAFbx), RING finger 1 (MuRF1), contractile properties assessed.Fourteen days cast-immobilization decreased fiber CSA 56% in CAST group (p 0.00); whereas, all treatment groups demonstrated greater than 0.00). Cast-immobilization increased MAFbx MuRF1 protein expression (p<0.01) while CAST-A, CAST-EA, CAST-ES lower levels (p<0.02) compared group. Following fourteen cast-immobilization, peak twitch tension did not differ between CAST-A CON 0.12).Skeletal atrophy, induced significantly attenuated or stimulation.
