Randomized controlled trial of the combined effects of Web and Quitline interventions for smokeless tobacco cessation

ABSTRACT
Use of smokeless tobacco (moist snuff and chewing tobacco) is a significant public health problem but users have few resources to help them quit. Web programs telephone-based (Quitlines) been shown be effective for smoking cessation. We evaluate the effectiveness program, Quitline, combination two recruited via Web.To test whether offering both Quitline intervention results in significantly better long-term abstinence outcomes than either alone; offer or outcome self-help manual only Control condition; report usage satisfaction interventions when offered alone combined.Smokeless (N= 1,683) wanting quit were online randomly one four treatment conditions 2×2 design: Only, + (printed guide). Point-prevalence all was assessed at 3- 6-months post enrollment.69% participants completed 6-month assessments. There no additive synergistic effect combining Complete Case more rigorous Intent To Treat (ITT) analyses. Significant simple effects detected, individually efficacious control achieving repeated 7-day point prevalence abstinence: (ITT, OR = 1.41, 95% CI 1.03, 1.94, p .033) (ITT: 1.54, 1.13, 2.11, .007). Participants likely complete call (OR 0.71, .054, .093, .013), number website visits duration did not differ with Quitline. Rates program helpfulness (p <.05) higher those versus quitline.Combining result effects, as found smoking. Both condition helping motivated tobacco. Intervention related amount content offered.
